I like to start by saying English is not my main dialect so please try to understand also Im not sure if this is a bpd or sleep apnea subreddit. I have a boyfriend for 2 years or so who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder early in his life. That illness made him take maintenance medications and one of them is Depakote (divalproex sodium) it is use to treat manic phase in a bipolar disorder and Abilify (Aripiprazole) which is an atypical anti psychotic. Both medications are known to have weight gain as common side effect which I think is contributing to his sleep apnea. Now, his sleep apnea is not yet officially diagnosed, but Im calling it because he has most of the symptoms; Loud snoring, I heard him choke in the middle of sleep ( because I cant sleep with his snoring ), silent pauses ( which really makes me nervous), daytime sleepiness and mouth breathing. I researched about sleep apnea, explained it to him and decided we should get a diagnosis from a reputable sleep clinic. He's more than willing to go. BUTTT .. i just read (as in minutes before writing this) this https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4208920/ its entitled cpap-induced mania in bipolar disorder: a case report. Tl;dr of this ,Clinicians need to monitor patients with bipolar disorder closely for worsening of manic symptoms when they are started on CPAP for underlying OSA.
I was disheartened by this, im concerned about the long term effects of sleep apnea but I don't want to risk that small percent of him having manic symptoms again.
If you have the same condition as us please share your experience. It would greatly help us.
Thanks.
Points: 1.no diagnosis of sleep apnea yet. 2. Not using cpap 3. Diagnosed with BPD.
