Question about AHI and CPAP

Let's say I ordinarily have an AHI of 50 and the CPAP machine shows an AHI of 1, does that mean it's reducing my AHI by 49 or does it mean my AHI has always been 1?

I'm worried I received a pretty subpar sleep study so I'm not sure if I trust it.

Not sure what’s wrong with me.

I woke up a few days ago gasping for air and couldn’t go back to sleep until like 4 am. This kept happening each day since Saturday and I’m already tired of it. I feel like right when I’m about to drift off to sleep I just emergency wake up and take a breath I also feel dizzy and numb when that happens. I’ve had this type of experience before although not as bad and only for like a day at a time and the last time I experienced something like this was 2 years ago. I did some research and found something about central sleep apnea. I’m definitely not overweight and I don’t snore so I don’t have the other type. I don’t know if this is my anxiety or I really do have central sleep apnea I’m just really concerned and scared that I might have to depend on a machine to sleep and that adds to the anxiety. It feels like I forget to breathe or something. Any thoughts on the matter and does anyone who has central sleep apnea want to say how it felt?

Has anyone got fired from sleeping at the job due to sleep apnea?

I constantly fall asleep at my job between 12-2 pm. I would be in the middle of a conversation then suddenly I would suddenly start snoring. I usually sleep at midnight and wake up at 9 am to go to work at 10. I just have my first sleep study test and my AHI is over 140 an hour. Oxygen saturation is in the 50-60%.

Unfortunately, looks like I won't be getting the CPAP machine until next year due to the wait time. My next appointment with the doctor is scheduled for December, then I should have another sleep test in July/August 2021 for CPAP sleep study, then hopefully a prescription for CPAP by October. But I am too afraid I will get fired from my job if this keeps up.

What is sleep apnea?

Hi,guys! Now,lets explain what is apnea disease formally!

Apnea literally means “no breath” or “stopping breathing”. When you have sleep apnea, air stops flowing to your lungs for 10 seconds or longer – that is, you actually stop breathing.

This makes your blood oxygen level drop which in turn triggers your brain to wake you up just enough to take a breath.1 Then you fall back to sleep and the cycle begins again.

This can happen more than 30 times every hour and you may not even know it. As you can imagine, constantly being triggered back into breathing, hour after hour, night after night, can put a strain on your body. The next day you may feel tired and wrung out. Sleep apnea isn’t just an inconvenience. Left undiagnosed and untreated, it can have serious long-term effects on your health.2,3

It’s so common! 3 in 10 men and almost 1 in 5 women have sleep apnea.4

What causes sleep apnea?

In adults the most common cause of obstructive sleep apnea is obesity. Being overweight can add extra fat around the neck and airways. During sleep the throat and tongue muscles relax causing the airway to become blocked. But obesity is not the only cause - other factors are also associated with sleep apnea. Learn more about what causes sleep apnea

Central sleep apnea occurs when your brain doesn’t tell your body to take a breath. It’s normally associated with other conditions such as heart failure or stroke.

How to prevent sleep apnea?

If you have a family member who’s been diagnosed with sleep apnea, you’ll probably be concerned that you might also be at risk, especially if you snore. The risk of you having obstructive sleep apnea is about 50% higher if you have a parent, child or sibling with the condition.8 However, you can reduce your risk of sleep apnea in the future with some lifestyle changes.

  • Losing weight (if you’re overweight), being physically active, quitting smoking and reducing your evening intake of alcohol can all reduce your risk of being diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea.
  • If you suffer from insomnia and take sleeping pills it’s worth noting that sleeping pills may contribute to sleep apnea. Talk to your doctor about alternative remedies for insomnia.
  • If you snore when you sleep on your back, try and get into the habit of sleeping on your side instead.

Seeking advice/recommendations. (early 20s, Male, normal BMI)

Just got confirmed for (moderate sleep apnea) through Lofta's at-home device.

AHI: 16/hr. RDI: 25/hr. 02 nadir: 92.

I only slept 5 hours that night.

I slept in a mixture between my side and by back, but never my stomach.

I've been suffering from severe fatigue, waking up w/ dry mouth, morning headaches, tiredness, etc. for around a year. Before this, I was very fit and high-energy exercising multiple times a week. It's exciting to think that I may be able to feel normal again!

The problem is, I don't know which mask I should purchase. I breathe through my nose half the time, and the other half through my mouth. The sleep report recommended 4-20cm H2O with heated humidity and mask/interlace fitting.

I'm about to buy the ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet CPAP Machine with HumidAir. The problem is, I don't know which mask I should purchase. I breathe through my nose half the time, and the other half through my mouth. The sleep report recommended 4-20cm H2O with heated humidity and mask/interlace fitting. I'm about to buy an F30 hybrid mask. Any recommendations?

Has anyone had any experience with this newer medication combo?

I stumbled on this while researching and while it is not "finished" in studies (which I find odd because the initial research came out in 2017) the possibility at least for short term or temporary relief is massive.

https://www.pulmonologyadvisor.com/home/topics/obstructive-sleep-apnea-osa/obstructive-sleep-apnea-outcomes-with-atomoxetine-plus-oxybutynin/

The concern is that there are no studies about long term results about combining the two and it appears to increase central apnea but remove OSA almost entirely. Has anyone tried this? The goal of the medication combo appears to simulate the concept of the Inspire implant

Is Over-Oxygen a symptom of sleep apnea, or anxiety??

Sometimes I'll wake up with my heart pounding, feeling light-headed, and one of my nostrils is completely plugged. It feels like I have been gasping for air, but I'll hold my breath for about 15-20 seconds. My entire body then feels tingly like my body is correcting itself, and then my nose becomes unplugged. I feel better, but then have trouble sleeping afterwards from my body having been in panic mode.

Is this sleep apnea, or just some panic attack where I'm over breathing? I make sure I'm sleeping with my mouse closed and on my side. My smart watch shows I'm tossing and turning a lot, and the O2 1-3 times a night dips to 88 and low 90s for a few minutes, and is steady about 94-95, but I'm not sure it's that accurate. Sleep test said pRDI = 7.0/h and pAHI = 1.4/h, so my doctor says I'm fine. Some days I feel stressed and anxious with heart palpitations, but I'm not sure if it's because I'm not getting enough sleep some nights.

Edit: oops, didn't mean to put a second question mark in the title

Just got my home sleep study results... Doc said "severe"...

Hi all, Just joined this sub this morning, as it's officially official, I've got a pretty bad case of apnea I've been told.

I (39m) haven't woken up from a night's sleep feeling rested in probably 20 years, and have a family history of sleep apnea and obesity. I am overweight (290, 6 foot even, think former football player build, not "how does that guy get in an out of his car without a crane" by any means) chef, non-smoker, social drinker. For years, partners have complained about my snoring, and while it comes and goes in severity, I often wake up with general muscle fatigue round my chest, feeling like I haven't taken full breaths for extended periods of time.

Two nights ago, I completed a home study, and my doctor called me today with the results, which she said were "quite severe". I went to bed at 12:30 am, really settled down to sleep closer to 1, and the testing apparatus shut itself off at 8 am. I had 237 events of "non-breathing", including a stretch of 67 seconds at one point. My oxygen levels in the blood got as low as 74% at one point.

Couple of questions:

  1. How severe are these numbers compared to yours? I'm not trying to win any awards here, but I'm wondering if I should be amazed I'm still able to function?
  2. I see a lot of you listing your AHI number? The doc called me this morning, literally waking me up, so it took me a second to comprehend that she was going over test results with me, and scribbled down what I could so I'm not sure if I missed my AHI number or if she didn't give it to me, or if it's something I can calculate on my own?
  3. She has written me a scrip for a cpap, and I'm wondering if y'all have suggestions for me on what type to go with... it should be noted I keep a pretty close cropped beard (usually <5mm).
  4. The doc mentioned something about insurance only covering me if I use the machine at least 4 hours a night for 70% of the nights? I remember my dad telling me that the first night he slept with a CPAP, he felt like $1 million the next day for the first time in decades. Do any of y'all really ever use this intermittently to the point of the percentage of usage time falling below 70% of the nights monthly?

Thanks for any insight you can provide, I'm excited to hopefully have some relief soon, and I look forward to connecting with the community here....

Symptoms?

I'm set to get a sleep study soon but I'm just curious if sleep apnea could be causing these symptoms or if its something else.

Symptoms: severe acne, eye problems (meibomian gland issues), intense anxiety (social and general) and depression, brain fog, difficulty concentrating, cardio/exercise issues

Thanks.

How tight should my head band be with nasal pillows?

Hey guys, just got my cpap a month ago and couldn't do a fitting due to covid. I have the airfit p10 for her. I started with XS pillows and was getting sores in my nostrils. Realized the size was off. The small size was almost perfect but didn't cover a tiny part of my nostril so I went with medium. I've had some issues with my mouth coming open slightly but I'm hoping I'll adjust. Anyway, I felt like the head band is still pushing the pillows a bit up my nose. I bought a "for him" strap which although it claims to be the same size is actually bigger. It's a bit looser on my head but still keeps the pillows in place. What's the right tightness? Should the pillows sit gently under my nostrils or be more secure?

One week with the Cpap Machine and still no help

First off I have to say that this isn't my first post in this community and every time I do post here I get so much useful information.

So its been about one week that I've been using the my Cpap machine and I've been averaging a little over 7 hours of usage with less than 3 events per hour. the last 4 days I've had 1 or less events per hour since and haven't taken my mask off at all since I'm getting used sleeping with it. When I took my sleeping test I had an AHI index of 23.5 and I have no idea how long I've been dealing with sleep apnea in general. Even though I've been getting a decent amount of sleep l feel like I've made 0 improvement and still feel shit throughout the day. I talked to a family friend that's a respiratory therapist that told me my body was basically deprived of oxygen and that its finally recovering so i'ts going to take some time. I feel like I'm only using about 10% percent of my brain and its the most frustrating thing ever. I'm just wondering if I'm doing something wrong or if I'm expecting positive results too early. Also, I'm seeing a neurologist next week just in case because I literally feel like my brain is broken.

Is this a symptom of sleep apnea?

So I’ve suspected a sleep disorder for ~2 years because of something I call brain fog.

Last night (this morning actually) I was doing my typical fading in and out of sleep to tired to move and noticed I was taking very short breaths. Like 1/4 or 1/5 of what I normally take, and noticed I felt air hunger. This was on my back, so I flipped over to my side and drifted back off and didn’t notice anything after that.

Unable to exhale through nasal mask

Hi guys,

I tried my auto BiPAP (iBreeze 25A) for the first time last night with the Airfit P10. I had an absolutely horrible time, especially breathing out. Breathing in was great, my IPAP was going up to around 10 ish, and it felt super easy. Breathing out however was really laboured (EPAP around 4-5). It got to the point where my limbs were tingling from CO2 buildup/oxygen deprivation and I started seeing stars in my eyes. I had to take if off because I felt like I was suffocating.

Is this normal with the Airfit P10? Even when I turn the machine off and try to breathe out it feels really difficult. It's not too bad to breathe out if the P10 is out of the machine though, it's just as soon as I connect it to the pipe it becomes a nightmare. Can anyone recommend me a better mask that will make exhaling much easier?

My Apap just took a fall

As I just said, my AirSense 10 just took a fall. It was a complete and utter accident. This happened less than an hour ago and I’m typing this from my phone since my sleep is pretty much shot from the nerves and the shock.

I went to sleep a bit after midnight and my SO went to sleep about an hour later. In her struggle to get comfy and turn down for the night, she kept hearing music. Like a video was left playing on a phone. She checked her phone. Nothing. The only other culprit in her tired mind is my phone.

She walks around the bed to my side and can’t find my phone in the dark, so she gets her phone and turns the flashlight on to accidentally shine it on my face, this startles me and she quietly and tenderly asks for my phone. I point at it a bit grumpy from the shining of a thousand suns. She checks it to find it completely in sleep mode. In her rush to keep any more sleep from me and herself, she turned off the light on her phone and walked back to her side of the bed, as she did, her foot got caught on the power cable of my apap and dragged it far beyond the edge of the nightstand. Sending my apap and it’s full reservoir of water tumbling to the floor.

I felt a gentle tug on my mask and the machine began to sputter and gurgle through the tube. She began to scramble to try and turn the flashlight to shine on her phone at the same time that she’s trying to pick up the gurgling machine up from the floor in the darkness. My eyes shot open, and my sleep instantly left me. I quickly tore the mask off my face, and I jumped off the bed to hit the light switch for the main light in the bedroom. I saw she was trying to still hold on to the still gurgling and spluttering apap. In an unceremonious fashion, I yanked the power cord out of the machine and the tube while she was holding the gurgling apap. And then took the machine from her hands and took it to the master bathroom where I took the water reservoir and emptied it on the sink. I then placed the apap on its side with the reservoir side facing the floor on a dry towel.

This all happened in a minute or two. I didn’t think I simply reacted. She apologized profusely and I tried to calm her down. It was an accident. Accidents happen. I tried to lay down to sleep with her again. Turned all the phones and lights off this time. I laid on the bed for maybe thirty minutes without getting any actual sleep or rest. All I can think of is, is my machine dead? Is it ruined?

I turned the bedside light on and got my phone and then went to the bathroom to get all the pieces to my apap. I took them to the kitchen table and assembled it with no water in the reservoir. I then went back to the bedroom to get the power cable to plug in my machine. It started up fine and immediately began a sleep cycle, I turned it off and ran a maskfit cycle. I sat in the floor with the machine still on the table. I put my hand over the end of the tube and slowly let a bit or air leak to simulate breathing. I began to feel water droplets out of the tube. Lots of droplets but very far from a steady stream. I noticed the machine was whisper quiet and no longer gurgling. I just sat on the floor with my palm over the end of the tube just letting the water droplets get out for several minutes until the machine reverted back to sleep cycle. I turned the apap off and disassembled it once again and left everything in the sink’s drying rack.

So now I lay here wondering. Will it be ok? Do I need to get a new one? Can I get a new one with all this quarantine business going on? I clearly can’t sleep and I need higher wisdom to put me at peace. Sorry for the wall of text. I’m sure this post could have been a bit shorter, but what else am I going to do if I can’t sleep...
