I made a post about a month ago detailing my MMA surgery and that I had at the end of November and my disappointment that I feel zero benefit as I recover. My surgeon said be patient and I'll have a sleep study at the 6 month mark, but feeling no benefit at month 4 is very discouraging.
I realized my mouth opens when I sleep, and in desperation, I tried using a chin strap to keep my mouth closed. I don't feel amazing, but I feel I actually had half decent sleep doing this the last couple of nights. The dark circles aren't as apparent under my eyes, more healthy colour in my face and brain fog has lifted. I actually tried this a couple of years ago with a chin strap with similar results. I don't know why, but I had forgotten I did that. I have up on I think because sometimes I would take the strap off in the middle of the night. Since I am seeing similar benefit to a couple of years ago, I am wondering if mouth breathing is actually considered a cause of sleep apnea.
I did some googling and some osa studies say mouth breathing can contribute to but not cause sleep apnea, but one study suggested it may in fact be a cause but more study was needed.
Anyone read or having discussions with their doctor regarding this? I'm wondering if I didn't need surgery at all and should have focused on ensuring I breathe through my nose while sleeping.
To any of you mouth breathers with full face mask CPAP, you should really try to ensure you breathe through your nose. Even outside sleep apnea, it is much healthier for numerous reasons. If you have a stuffed up nose, you might want to look into turbinate reduction. That is the one part of my surgery that has been a resounding success. Both nostrils are clear 24/7. This surgery is less invasive.thsn a deviated septum. Actually now that I recall I gave up on the chin strap a couple of years ago because of my stuffed up nose. If I could redo this, I may have just done the turbinate surgery first.
