Sleep Apnea: Are their breathing exercises that help?

Hi everyone.

I went through a sleep study just before the COVID shutdown began. I guess I will have to wait till things normalize and I can go back to the sleep doctor with the report.

I have had sleep trouble for more than 3 years now. But I also have Ankylosing Spondylitis, a spinal condition, which makes it difficult to sleep without pain for more than 5-6 hours at a stretch. I had attributed my day-time sleepiness and morning headaches to that. Only when I told my rheumatologist of this, that she asked me to consult a sleep specialist. My bad, COVID has now intervened.

While cleaning my study-table, I came across my sleep study and was just going through it. What I noticed was that I have as much central apnea and mixed apnea as obstructive apnea. Obstructive apnea is only 8.1/h. Central apnea is 6.3/h and mixed apnea is 12.3/h. And there is some hypopnea.

I was wondering whether treatment protocols are different for central and mixed apnea in comparison to obstructive apnea. Should I be worried about central apnea?

More importantly, since it may be several weeks before I am actually able to consult the doctor again and get the recommended treatment, are there any breathing exercises that I can pursue? I saw a couple of videos on youtube with tongue exercises Have they helped anyone?

Stay safe!
