Add a DIY oxygen adapter to your CPAP for under $5 (just in case)

You may heard of the Resmed Climateline Oxy. (available online for around $50) but likely don't have one. It's very easy to convert your hose (any model) for less than $5. All you need is a 1/4" ID x 1/8" NPT MIP Hose Barb Adapter Fitting from the hardware store and a drill.

They go for a few dollars at Home Depot, $4.49 Ebay, and a 5 pack of plastic ones here for aquariums the same price. You can substitute a 1/4" or 3/8" male pipe thread which may be easier to find as long as the barbed diameter is 1/4" (6.4mm) it should work. It does not need to be certified lead-free (physics).

1). On the T-junction of the Climateline that plugs into the machine, there's a white cap (you can't remove it). This is where the O2 fitting goes. If you have a different CPAP hose pick a suitable place. Ther's already a tiny indent in the center of the cap (picture). 2). Use an awl, nail, knife, or something pointy to make it slightly deeper to help guide the drill bit (optional). 3). Use a 1/8" drill bit to carefully make a guide hole in the center. Keep in mind the plastic is rather thin so use only light pressure, high speed, and be ready for it to breakthrough (have somebody hold it or use a vise).

The precise way to do this is to use a pipe tap, but if you don't have one you can twist the brass fitting into in the plastic cap and the threads should dig in. 4). Drill a 3/8" hole for the 1/8" pipe, a 1/2" hole for the 1/4" pipe, and 5/8" hole for 3/8" pipe. Diameters are estimated so you may need to ream the hole slightly. 5). Insert the treaded end and tighten clockwise. Don't overtighten, as long as the threads go through and it's firm your good. There's no need for pipe tape or sealant.

6), Now you're ready to enjoy heated humidified oxygen-rich air by slipping the line connecter onto the barb. If your not using it you'll need to cap it off. A rubber/vinyl end caps should work, so will hot glue or you can cut a spare line short and use a golf tee to make a stopper, or pinch it off a with pliers and melt it shut. Whatever you use, check for leaks when you're done or your CPAP won't work right.

FYI: I had a really beautiful post all written out earlier then my cat jumped up and bam, he somehow did select all and delete then posted it blank in one enthusiastic sprint across my desk. I don't have finished pictures because I just thought of it this afternoon but I plan on building it soon, just in case.
