Wake up not breathing?

I always read that a marker of apnea is waking up gasping for breath, or someone else hearing you gasp during the night. I've been diagnosed with apnea and have used a CPAP for several years now. But sometimes if I fall asleep for a nap or whatever during the day, or rarely don't have it on at night, I wake up just not breathing at all. I'm not gasping, it's like I slowly come to and eventually take small breaths. But it feels like I've been holding my breath, just that my body doesn't really know what to do about it. No one has heard me gasp during sleep either, just snore and do these weird, high-pitched sighs. Does this even make sense? Does anyone know what would cause a lack of gasping, like I'm not even trying to breathe?
