Relation between neck injury/sudden sleep apnea symptoms?

I'm posting this as I'm laying upright on my couch trying to get some damn sleep. I know it's a long read but any help is appreciated; I'm completely exhausted.

Earlier this past week I suffered a severe injury to my neck which left me with extreme pain for 4 days, unable to keep my neck held straight. This was nothing new to me except for the notable severity of the pain this time - I have had these episodes every few months for a few years now since being diagnosed with an eroded disk in my cervical spine.

The strange part is that since this episode, I have been waking up at some point every night, gasping for air, usually just once within a few minutes of falling asleep. This has gone on for several nights in a row now.

Tonight however as I tried going to sleep, I have been uncomfortably awakened as soon as I fall asleep, feeling lightheaded and as if I my breathing has stopped. It happened about 10 times before I had to move to the couch. My breath has been very shallow upon waking up and my head is pounding. It feels like my lungs are stopping all normal function every time I start dozing off. Possibly CSA?

So my question(s): Is it most likely sleep apnea? Am I crazy or could it be related to my cervical spine injury? I read a couple of sources that indicated a link between the two, but am a little desperate for more information before I am able to ask a doctor. I just don't understand how this problem came out of nowhere.

Some information about me:

*I am young and average-built with little fat *I am not currently taking any medication *I have a history of low blood pressure *I do not snore very often *Sleeping on my side provides no relief

Again, thank you for reading and for any help.
